I worked for a company that built a custom async "Box" that interfaced with
scales, and pretty much any non-standard device, eg. signal lights, LCD, RF
badge readers, etc.  The "Box" connected to the AS/400 via an async port, and a
never-ending program monitored for any data to transfer.
