You were right, Jon. I was actually mislead by the RPG III help-text for an E-specifications field, that's not even applicable to arrays. Being no RPG expert, I naturally assumed there should be an explicit variable type specifier for an RPG III array. Now I undestand this feature has only been introduced in RPG IV.
