You can use SUBSTR as part of the SET clause in the UPDATE statement. In
fact, any scalar (non-group) function is fair game there, so long as it
doesn't violate datatype rules. E.g., you can use something like

update somefile set somefield='first6' ||
substr(somefield,7,length(somefield)-6)

or whatever.
