Re: AS/400 fax software

Back pre V3, we tried to implement the IBM fax product without much
luck.  We currently use two systems:
Rydex

Basically a PC server attached as a twinax device.  The 400 interface is
very user friendly - sends fax to multiple recipients very well.  Also
allows viewing of fax history for months.  Note that the code is not
observable, so you have to have current maintenance to go from CISC to
RISC.  Adding capacity is a problem, since each PC attached can only
support 1-4 modems.  You have to buy the modems & a license per PC from
RMTI, so it can get expensive.  Also, unless you purge the system (which
requires an exclusive lock on the library), the data files (which
contain the text of each fax) can get large - depending, of course, on
your volume.  Images can be added to a fax via PCX files loaded directly
on the PC's.  It includes an interface to allow you to fax an image to
the PC (if you don't have a scanner).  Images can be incorporated into
documents by adding codes to the text of the document.

We have moved most of our faxing over to Biscom:

which is a specialized Unix server you buy from Biscom.  They have a
couple of models, depending on the number of lines you need.  Adding
lines can be less expensive than Rydex.  The unit can attach via SDLC or
LAN.  The only faxing we haven't moved over is one application where
usres need the ability to check the status of a fax from up to six
months ago.  Biscom doesn't provide this, and we haven't written our own
interface to do that yet.  Images are either loaded from the 400 as page
segments (using normal AFP), or on the server, although I don't think it
has the "fax-in" capability of Rydex.
