Programs, at least, can be replaced while in use. I don't recommend that anyone do that regularly, however. If in use, a copy is created in QRPLOBJ, the linkage is transferred to the new object, and users go on their merry way, completely unawares. They'll use the old version until they leave their own invocation of it.

Files don't work this way at all. We do most of our updates at night, when no one is on the system. Of course, we're not a 24-7 shop, either.

It's always risky to replace objects while in productive use. Lots of things can go wrong, as has been mentioned already in this thread.
