I'd be surprised if there was a direct way of determining the number of
records in OPNQRYF without actually READING all the records first. I may
be wrong, but I think that unless OPNQRYF builds a new access path as
part of the OPEN process, the message at the bottom of the screen saying
how many records have been selected actually gets updated at the time of
your RPG program run.
If OPNQRYF is a small file,  you can use CPYFRMQRYF and process the
completion message.
