Tim,
When you copy the spool file to the PF, specify CTLCHAR( ) as *FCFC
(First Character Forms Control), *PRTCTL (AS/400 4 byte control
caharacters in first 4 positions), or *S36FMT. Make sure the file is
defined long enough to accomodate the control characters. 

When you want to go back to a spool file, override QPRINT with the same
format you specified earlier. This should take care of the "dump" look
you are seeing.
