The problem is most likely that your paging service has OLD equipment, most do called a TAP. It's not that your new modem wont step down but rather it has newer compression features built in (MNP5, etc.) I put text pager software on my Amiga (desk top) at home which uses a newer modem and ran into this (most Rockwell chip modems will). I have one of the new IBM 33.6baud modems on my RISC but have not looked at the manual yet. What your going to have to do is sent an init string to the modem just prior to the ATDT that will shut off all advanced functions. For example my home Supra modem would be ATZ\r\d\datm1&fns37=1\r\ATDT which looks like a lot for garbage but works. Good luck.
