Charlie,

I like getting information from vendors, and I think it's totally
appropriate for a vendor to notify a questioner when they have a soliution
to a specific problem. In the old Build vs Buy question, Buy is almost
always the better way to go and vendors are best positioned to tell us when
something we need already exists. Besides, in this industry vendors are one
of the best forms of education available to us.

But I also (strongly) agree with Dave M. that if someone gains financial
interest through a product, they need to say so. Not only is that part of
the list rules, it's just good netiquette.

As long as we all know who we're dealing with, vendor participation is a
very good thing.
