I think the "have to be VERY careful if you update them" is the key phrase. 
Granted reading character data and moving it to a display file is easy. But 
some of the other points people on this list have made, particularly the 
one about there not being a "null" date value of 0 or similar, really ca  
uses trouble. If you have 0 for a date field, you can't move it to a DATE 
datatype unless you change your logic.
