John, I've heard you speak and I've seen some of your coding: I'd bet *really* big bucks that you do exactly as you say. I'd also bet you are one of the top programmers in the world. I'd also bet there are many shops with code that isn't even close to meeting your minimum levels of performance. Yet that code is the code we are dealing with most of the time. Also remember, some of these programs are 12+ years old, from the Sys/36 or 38. They've already been adjusted for external file descriptions (or not). Some of these are 6,000+ lines long and no one is left that remembers how the program evolved to this point. All anyone will swear to is that it hasn't failed in the last 5 years. No one is volunteering to touch those programs. At least no one still sane. on 06/07/97 at 11:16 PM, John Carr <74711.77@CompuServe.COM> said: #I do all those neat Performance things so that I can take (for a short #time frame maybe) a performance hit on strategically important things #like date and time types. #Just my $.02 #John Carr #EdgeTech -- ----------------------------------------------------------- boothm@earth.goddard.edu ----------------------------------------------------------- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This is the Midrange System Mailing List!
