Yes, many folks here ARE new to the Internet. Midrange systems by their nature aren't exactly conduscive to "state of the art" in most installations. However, on this list we often thank those that have helped us -- if for no other reason than to stop other people from continuing to answer the already answered question. You didn't quote any offending responses, but I'll bet that they fall into the latter category. > This is (apparently) an unmonitored discussion, which means we need to > monitor ourselves. > Be kind to your community, don't send us garbage! > > Quote only that portion of a message needed to i.d. the original message, > (i.e. at LEAST don't copy the Midrange-Computing disclaimer, as the mailer > will append yet another copy. > > The Net is in a traffic jam, please don't add to the problem. Think before > you SEND. David actually monitors these preceedings quite closely. He only censors those that "get out of line", which happens infrequently among professionals. He also sends novices (I can TELL you from my own experience two years ago!) personal messages about the sort of quoting that you are decrying. I somehow doubt that we will refrain from giving thanks to those that helped us, especially if we tire of hearing the same thing over and over again. While I realize that several people (especially those overseas) pay for the thank you's by the piece, they're one of the things that I like about Midrange-L...
