FTP - Signed data -- MIDRANGE-L

I'm pretty sure this has been covered already, but I wasn't paying
attention at the time.

Does anyone remember the cure for sending Signed data using FTP? 
Specifically, we're having trouble with send negativbe numbers to an NT
system.  -1 gets transalated to a J, etc.  

Is there a way around this, or do all of the FTP fields have to be
character?
