Memorex 1477C - AS/400 - HP4 printing problem

We have a Memorex 1477C with an HP4 printer attached, connected to our
AS/400 (V3M1)    This senerio has worked succesfully for a couple of years
in that the info we print to it from the /400 accepts cpi changes from the
/400 program.  We recently relocated this device (in the wiring closet) to
another port and controller.  When the printer would not auto-config, we
moved it back to where it was originally.  The original device descriptions
were never removed let alone altered in any way.  NOW the printer doesn't
pick up the cpi changes from the /400 program any more and we get a blank
page spit out before each printout.  Can anyone tell me what has happened
and how to rectify the situation?
