Dear Loyd,

Items started in Win 95 Autoexec.bat are loaded before the Windows portion of
Win 95 is started. Items loaded in Winstart.bat are loaded as part of the
Windows initialization process. There are certain DOS TSR programs (TSR -
Terminate and Stay Resident) that will force Win 95 into 16 bit compatibility
mode if they are loaded in the Autoexec.bat.

Many twinax adapter handlers will cause Win 95 to go into 16 bit compatibility
mode when they are loaded in the Autoexec.bat. This is why you will now find so
many references in AS/400 Win 95 publications to loading adapter handlers in
the Winstart.bat.

If you get the message that you are running in 16 bit compatibility mode
instead of the native 32 bit mode, it means you are giving up a lot of
operating system performance.

<snip snip>
I'm not that familiar with the WIN95 startup process, and I'm curious to
know what happens between AUTOEXEC processing and WINSTART processing that may
cause this problem...

/Paul
