MT2834BL Modems for Beeping and PTFs -- MIDRANGE-L

Our AS/400 RISC box (v3.6) has an IBM/Multitech MT2834BL modem for use as
the ECS modem.

We would like to be able to use this modem for both PTFs -and- for paging.
The problem is: PTFs like Synchronous connections, and the paging systems
like Asynchronous connections.

Is there a way to switch the modem back and forth between the 2 types of
connection WITHOUT HUMAN INTERVENTION?  No switches to flip, no power
off/on; just software.
