As far as I know, v3.7 does come with level 40 security active.  Yes, you
can crank it down to 20, but think -very- carefully before you do.  

If your system is currently running at level 20, you should be able to do
anything you want with the thing (assuming you can get to a command line);
that shouldn't be too hard.

As far as running sorts in batch, you don't actually gain any speed, but
your terminals are not tied up.  Upgrading to 3.2 won't give you any speed
increase over 3.1; it's the same hardware.  Upgrade to 3.7 and you gain, but
that's because you're upgrading the hardware to a RISC box.
