Actually, program described printer files can take either alpha or numeric overflow indicators (external files do require numeric indicators). The main difference is that numeric indicators must be set off manually, while the alpha indicators are set off by the RPG cycle. If you're not using the RPG cycle, then you need to set off the alpha indicator manually as well. I seem to remember another potential problem with alpha indicators when not using the RPG cycle; something like the overflow indicator not getting set back on because the detail output part of the cycle was never being executed (until the end of the program).
