I hesitate to jump in as I haven't used unix type api's much, but I recall
there is an O_TEXTDATA flag on the open() file api.
Are you using that?  
Not sure if that would help remove the need for CPY* command, but it may
worth a try.

Actually, it may be copying the trailing blanks also. However, when you
then read() from it, it removes them and simply inserts a x'0D25' (crlf)
after the last bit of data on each line.
