While QCAPCMD was interesting it did not solve the problem. At first I thought that QCAPCMD would actually generate the request msg but then realized that I would do that. Once I sent a request message and received the message key back I used that. I don't need QCAPCMD and can still use QCMDEXC. Once the error is fired I use the key from the send program message to start getting messages from the queuel. I also tried to use the key value sent back in RETEXCPD but the key doesn't work unless the request message had been sent previously. I not thrilled with this overhead from the send, receive and then qcmdexc just to get the actual error if one occurs but don't know another way.

I suppose I could just surf the qjobmsgq directly but while faster will even add more complexity to the problem which is now solved. Just curious - I'm seeing the messages stored in the user's qjobmsgq but un-resolved. Are they actually stored resolved anywhere or do the dspjoblog pgms resolve them first before display.

I would suggest using QCAPCMD instead; opens up a number of possibilities.
