I'm looking into using a RETEXCPD to find out the details (i.e., the error

1. Is that going to get me the information I need? By the path of least
resistance?

I should think the path of least resistance would be to use the QMHRCVPM API.

2. Does anybody know what this "exception data retention option" is, that
the MI manual refers to in the RETEXCPD pages?

An exception description can be set to not save exception data. If this value is set to 1 then RETEXCPD will not return the exception data. See the MATEXCPD, MODEXCPD, SNSEXCPD, MI instruction templates. The 'No data' bit at offset 8, bit 3 is the "exception data retention option".

Simon Coulter.
