Open a file that contains a LOB field

When I try to open a file with a LOB I get a CPF428A message.

CPF428A:  Open of member ALLTYPE file ALLTYPE in KVGAPP failed.
Member ALLTYPE file ALLTYPE in library KVGAPP was not opened because
of error code 1.
1 -- The format for file ALLTYPE contains one or more large object fields
and
      the open request did not indicate that large object fields could be
processed
      by the user of the open.

..... codes 2 and 3 are the same message but for data link and user defined
types.

"the open request did not indicate that large object fields could be
processed" leads me to
believe that opening the file should be possible even though the docs say
you have to
use SQL to update files with these type columns.  If it helps any OPNDBF is
able to open the file.

Anyone know how to muck with files that contain these data types without
using SQL?
