COM is much more complicated than ILE but it provides a lot of functionallity and is fully documented. COM provides late binding through the IDispatch interface. This enables script languages to call functions and APIs just like a compiled program. Event signaling, where the server/api calls out to the client, is also missing from ILE. An IDL ( interface definition language ) which is needed for the late binding and call marshalling is missing. Maybe developers could add these features to ILE, maybe ILE is not as cumbersome as RPG makes it appear to be. But since IBM will not document it, ... Steve Richter
