"If I do not define a length will it adopt the length?"

Include the record length id in the UFCB but option it off with a negative:

dcl dd    RecordLengthID    auto bin(2) init(-1);
dcl dd    RecordLength      auto bin(2) init(0);

then open the file, then access the current open record length from the
open feedback, position 45. For example:

dcl spcptr ?ODP             auto;
dcl spcptr ?InputBuffer     auto;
dcl spcptr ?OutputBuffer    auto;
dcl spcptr ?OpenFeedBack    auto;
dcl dd     OpenRecordLength bas(?OpenFeedBack) pos(H"2D") bin(2);
/* ... */
dcl dd     FinalId          auto bin(2) init(H"7FFF");

dcl spcptr ?UFCB            auto init(?ODP);
dcl ol     OpenClose        (?UFCB) arg;

callx   ?Open, OpenClose, *;
cpynv   X, OpenRecordLength;
