confusion reigns supreme. Gene means 'cvtch', and "good hex" means
"good character representation" (in CVT-speak 'hex' is binary and is always
good, and 'character' means 'hexadecimal representation').
But IMHO, both error messages are bad. It should have been:
"invalid hexadecimal representation".
