At least the MCH1201 "scalar data cannot be changed" describes your problem
when the source is MI. Unfortunately the C function 'cvthc' throws a red
herring MCH3601 "pointer not set for location referenced" when the source
operand is not good hex. For example:

     H dftactgrp( *no ) bnddir( 'QC2LE' )

     D CVTCH PR extproc( 'cvtch' )
     D   Target                        *   value
     D   Source                        *   value
     D   Length                      10U 0 value

     D Target          S              3A
     D Source          S              6A   inz( 'AB#012' )
      /free
       CVTCH( %addr( Target ) : %addr( Source ) : 6 );
       *INLR = *on;
      /end-free

Instead of some SENSIBLE message like "invalid hex character", this code
fails with MCH3601 "pointer not set for location referenced" .
