Really?  At first glance, this would appear to be a job more productively
done in Java.  Nice ability to read arbitrary bytes from IFS.

What's the issue,here?   I know this is the "MI" list, and you're well into
it anyway, but the necessity of resorting  to assembler type methods in
this case escapes me.  Why go through the extra trouble when a
suitable-seeming HLL exists?
