The gap you observe is probably the variable-length access component.  A
full record I/O buffer has many components:

FIELD DATA COMPONENT
VARIABLE LENGTH ACCESS COMPONENT
NULL BYTE MAP COMPONENT
NULL KEY MAP COMPONENT
KEY FEEDBACK COMPONENT

Bit flags in the UFCB at file open determine whether or not a component
will exist in the record I/O buffer.
