Andrew, suppose your data file DDS contained a field with these keywords:

VALUES(   'A'   'B'   ' '   )   ALWNULL

Then your program can write four values into that field: A, B, blank, or
null.  Then interpret the meaning of A, B, blank, or null to fit your
application.
