  • Subject: why the 16meg space size limit?

Hi all,

What chgs would be needed in the architecture of the iseries to extend the size limit of a space to 1 gig or *NoLimit?

Is there enough room in the 16 byte ptr for a 4 byte, 6 byte offset from the base?

The 16meg limit seems to be an architectural anachronism, similar to the pc dos segment memory model.

Even the win32 api, with its memory mapped files, is less limited that the space ( 90 pct sure of this ).

Any knowledge of work around code in os400, extra code the ibm system programmers had to write to implement an os feature, code that would not have been needed if there was not a space size limit?

For example: the TeraSpace.  How many addn api's did ibm have to design, code and document to implement the teraspace? How much more complex is a user pgm that uses teraspaces? Is the teraspace only needed because of the size limit of the usrspc?

cheers,
Steve Richter
