That's the way things go, Brian. There are many generally accepted
terms that are wrongly used. Here are a few:

1) disk sector.  is not a sector (pie-shared part of circle),
but rather a segment (a part of a track).
2) encrypted password: it is not the password that is encrypted,
but rather some other text encrypted with the password as the key.
3) tidal wave: is usually a tsunami, caused by earthquakes (mostly)
rather than tides.
4) new millennium: was not at 2000, but will be in 2001.
etc, etc, etc

not much is gained trying to be a purist.
