I definitely agree. We spent many months working with users on setting up
preferences, templates, views and subsets. I was part of our engineering
team and I held weekly web-exs exploring the most efficient way to do
Bills of Material, Routings, validating costs, etc. I created subsets,
views, cards and templates on the fly. We worked on a test system and
simulated our daily activities. Then there was an accounting team,
purchasing team, MRP team, etc. They worked with our test data to create
POs, run MRP etc.
This was done through webex because there were several manufacturing sites

at different locations across the country. It worked well.
I believe this makes the difference between all users hating the system
and doing things inefficiently (or worse not being able to use the
information in the system) and a successful implementation.

Jerry,

I had the same issue here. At release 6.0 the only ones using browser
were mainly our engineering department.

With the backing of the upper management, I held many training sessions on

PowerLink. I had once a week meetings with each department bringing up
their views, subsets, sorts and cards. Letting them know we could do
anything they wanted. I would change them while they were sitting there
providing input on the fields that were most important to them. That
worked very well.

For our corporate office, which does everything in green screen for all
companies, it was a different story. For the AR department, I put
together a card that displays everything they need to know about a
customer on one card. This made is a whole lot faster for them to use the

PowerLink card verses the many screens to go through to get the same
information in green screen. I have pertinent customer information, open
AR, Cash receipts and the customer aging all on one card. I did write a
program that runs nightly and re-ages AR correctly and wrote it to a file.

Then made a object over the file. AM AR does not do a good job of aging.

For customer order entry and po entry they still use green screen because
it is so much faster.

I hope these idea help.

Hi Julie,

Maybe I need to clarify.

For only 5 users using Power Link and for what we pay for the EI lic it is

a waste of money.
We could have around 75 users.

I am putting together a proposal to management, whom have NOT embraced
Power Link, that we should do one of the following.

1. Embrace Power Link company wide. Develop ALL new systems in Power Link

and convert all existing systems to it.
2. Dump EI and get a development product like ProfoundUI. Select users can

still use Power Link where needed.
3. Dump EI and do all development in PHP on the IBMi.

I have not been here a that long but have experience in EI so I know what
it can do.

The issue is the management has not embraced it. We NEED to have a plan
of growth and vision. The way it has been is only reactionary to daily
business.

This is going to be a VERY interesting conversation.

Jerry

Jerry,

I strongly disagree with your statement regarding EI/ and Power Link. I,
and most of the XA community, embraced this solution many years ago and
the payback and value to my company has been tremendous. IDF and E/I are
the foundation that has given us a lot of value with XA for the past 7
years. Our users absolutely love it. It has given us the ability to
upgrade easier and be release transparent. We started with this at
Release 6, went to Rel. 7.8 and now 9.1. There are no other products or

tools like this with most other ERP packages that give you a flexible U/I
and allow you to extend your ERP applications seamlessly. Those of us on

XA and Mapics for the past 10+ years know the value and flexibility this
has brought to our companies. It is unfortunate your company has
neglected to find the value in this U/I and the tool set.

Wayne, I apologize for stepping in on your post.

Julie

Wayne,

You are trying to do what I was originally going to do. Get OS up 7.1
then deal with XA.
All the research I did pushed me the other direction. Neither way is not
without issues.

The users are testing out the 9.1 env now without any real issues. I
think you getting from 6 to 9.1 will be more of a challenge.

We are currently using PowerLink but for only 5 users and we have the EI
lic. What a waste of $$$.
I am looking at a product that I hope we can use to replace PowerLink and
our green screens.
We are using a sql server for the configurator product we use so going
across platforms is critical.

Best of luck!!

Jerry,
INFOR put out a conversion tool for IBM OS400 V6.1 that replaces the
AMALIB and AMXLIB with programs that have Observability set to *YES. We
loaded that and did the migration to IBM OS400 V7.1 successfully. The
green screen stuff works fine - no issues there but since the R6 client is

using Smalltalk for communication with SQL we are having these issues. We
had hoped not to upgrade to get this to work but with the results we are
receiving in the client, there may be no alternative. We have not even
started with Powerlink - I don't think it was available for MAPICS R6.
Hope you have better luck than we are.

Hi Wayne,

How are you getting to 7.1 with a rel 6 XA? The objects need to have been

compiled at 5.1 or greater.
We are at rel 7 going to 9.1 in the next month. Right on the heels of that

I am taking us to 7.1 of the OS.
Fun for me!!!

Do you use Powerlink and EI? What ver are you on with that? The rel 9
version of PowerLink runs our rel 7 of XA.

I was wondering if anyone has attempted to run MAPICS XA Release 6 on a I
series machine at OS400 V7.1?
We have attempted this feat on 3 different LPARS and have found that the
MAPICS Client will not perform certain "COPY" functions for Purchase
Orders and Items. I realize that we are treading on ground that INFOR
specifically says not to, but we are pretty close to getting this
migration to work. Since we cannot look at the Smalltalk data and the
actual SQL statements, we were wondering if anyone has possibly developed
a way to get past this? We definitely do not want to have to reinvent the
wheel here....

Thanks in advance,
