At present we are Rel 9.1 and running on OS 5.4.
But I hear that OS 9 has a better Java engine and
we all know that's what Powerlink consumes..

We are running Rel 9.1 with iOS 7.1 and previously ran R9 with it also
with no major issues. If you are going to 9.1, make sure you get to SP
level 2390 and review all later PTFs. There were quite a number of PTFs
we had to apply after going to R9.1
