Marc,

From 2000 through 2008 we had COM_Net up with a quoted availability of "24/7"
for our dealers, national and international, and did an automated IPL using the
iSeries job scheduler every Sunday morning at 00:00:05, then used job scheduler
at 00:20:00 to autostart what I couldn't do in QSTRUP01, and restarted what was
needed in XA that I couldn't do with job scheduler with ROBOT at 00:21:00.
Never had a single complaint.

In 2009, the company upgraded to a 9406-E4A, still running XA/R6 and V5R4M5, and
massively increased DASD (50-60% utilization). After that, IPLs were only done
when maintenance had to be done to the system, or when a power failure occurred
that exceeded the capacity of the UPS (which unfortunately had slipped from 65
minutes to 10-15 due to failing batteries - the company refused to replace the
batteries). There was no noticeable degradation of performance.

Subject: [MAPICS-L] Strategies to Minimize IPLs

We are currently following the regimen of weekly IPLs what have long been
recommended. As we look at extending our work options outages on Sunday are
becoming less acceptable to the business.

I am wondering if people on this list have recommendations and approaches to
minimize or eliminate the need for IPLs.
