Thanks for all the info. I like the Pre/Post backup commands. That will
suit what I need to do.

The other thing that I would watch for when attempting to backup outside
of
XA is the removal of any lock on SYSCTL (unattached jobs, client
processes,
etc). You may think that you are getting a full backup but may be missing
some important files.

I have been using the Pre/Post backup commands for years without any
problems. They end/start specific subsystems for my post backup command
which then backs up the data in the same manner as the XA did. For
example,
if we are saving to disk (to AMSLIB), then all my custom libraries get
saved
to disk. If the save is to tape, then all my custom libraries get saved
to
tape.

I even have a job that force closes and posts any IM batches if necessary
(this one runs as a scheduled job a half-hour before the normal scheduled
backup. Separate jobs run after the backup to run the IM Audits and the
COM
Inventory Transaction Register. These have been running at multiple
clients
for years without any issues.

"Also, if your client is at R7.7 or greater with the latest version of
Link
Manager, there are other routines that you need to take into account.
Especially ensuring the backup of the client data and integrator data."

XA backups don't back up client/integrator data as part of their normal
backup process in 7.7 or 7.8? I hope I misunderstood that statement....
