I can't. That's what I'm struggling with. The install has to be done
from a PC, and it has to use the PCANYWHERE install process.

I'm installing the IFS components before the client components, to
create an empty R78 environment.

Here are the excerpts from the SH15599 document, which describes that
activity.

-----------
1. Download release 7.8 ERP XA Client Applications SH15506 from the
Infor Download Center. See the Windows PC section of Using downloaded
media on page 8 for more information on how to use the ISO disc image.

Note: On the ERP XA R7 product information page of the Download Center,
click the description of the row for ERP XA Client Applications - IDF
and then locate the image marked ERP XA R7.8 Client Applications - IDF
09302008 - SH15506.

2. Insert or load the installation media for the release 7.8 ERP XA
Client Applications into your Windows PC. When the media is loaded, a
window will automatically open to an install guide entitled Getting
Started for Administrators. If the guide does not open automatically,
you can launch it by running StartHere.html located in the root folder
of the install disc.

3. Follow the detailed instructions in the install guide Getting
Started for Administrators. Please be sure to download the ERP XA
Client Applications Update (SH15606) before starting these instructions
because that download will be needed in section Step 4 Install the
latest updates of the install guide.

My next installation attempt will be to travel to our data center and
try the installation. At that point, I'll be in the same building as the
iSeries, which puts me in the local LAN.

Joe, another solution Infor recommended is what you had to do, by using
RDP to your Office PC. That may be another step I need to pursue.
Unfortunately, I'll have to find another PC to load the installation
files and then use a Remote Desktop connection to install to the IFS.
This could get a little more difficult as we try and do this for more of
our sites. We may have to move that PC around or find one for each site.
That's something we'll need to work through

Thanks to all for your feedback!

The long duration of the attempted install may be due to the fact that
your PC is not on the local LAN. The client install CD itself is around
1GB and the IFS is also quite large. Ours is over 6GB. Could you run
the install from a local PC using RDP (remote Desktop)? I actually did
the install of ours from my home by using RDP to my office PC through
our VPN. This may not solve the reason for failure but it might fail
sooner.

Part of the problem is that the iSeries is not in the same location as I
am. I have been through the logs, and sent them to Infor. The PC logs do
not show enough to help diagnose what I am running into.

In our case, I am trying to do a brand new install of the R78
environment. When I get that done, we will be migrating an R6
environment, which is at PCM 7412.

I am following the instructions from SH15608, the enhanced migration
process. The first steps are getting an "empty" R7.8 environment built.

I have not been able to get past the transfer step to see what is next.

We did this back in April and I believe it took about an 1-1.5 hours.
We did have a few problems with startup tasks after the install but
Infor was able to walk us through the issues. We upgraded from Rel 7.7.
What is your From release?

When they say local PC, I believe they mean a PC on the same LAN as the
iSeries and not across a WAN or VPN. Even if you did not run it as a
local PC, eight hours does seem to be a long time. As I recall, the
client install process moves the MAPICS IFS folder to a new INFOR IFS
folder, does some separation of environments, installs the new Link
Manager, PowerLink and other client install sets to the IFS, installs
Link Manager and PowerLink to your PC and then starts the global
environment.

There is an install log that is created on the PC and this helped us
diagnose a couple of failed attempts.

Subject: [MAPICS-L] R78 Client Install

Hello All,

I have been working to install the R78 Client software. The process is
part of the R78 Install/upgrade procedure announced and made available
in June. The green screen server installation and upgrade to PCM 09955
went pretty well. I have not tried the data migration yet.

I am struggling with the Client Install. The last time I ran the Client
install, it ran for over 8 hours before it failed. I am being told by
Infor the install will "run for a long time unless I have a locally
attached PC." I'm not sure what is meant by "locally attached PC". I am
installing to an iSeries Model 570.

The main reason I have been given for the installation length of time is
due to the large amount of data being transferred and installed on the
IFS. I am also being told bandwidth and network latency are also
contributing to the length of time required. From my previous
experiences and tracking the installation, I can see what has been
installed. Unfortunately, I can't see the finish line. It sounds like
the good-old "This may take some time" message.

Because of the change in the installation process, the install must be
done from a PC. You cannot insert an install CD/DVD into the iSeries and
install from there.

Has anyone experienced the same lengths-of-time associated to the
installation? Are there any suggestions I can try to help with the
process?

Thank You,

Sam Delaquila
