None that we've seen. We've used this approach since the S/36 MAPICS II
days in the 80's. Purchasing occasionally gets upset when the reworkers
use what they consider an excess of expensive parts, but I remind them that
it's no different than if production damages and scraps the stuff (which we
all know NEVER happens!!!).
Tracking is good (they put a tag# in REFNO for the IU transactions to show
the repair order also - allows for a LOT of reporting that way), and as I
said, we WANT the parts to show as consumed in MRP. I mean, not much
difference than TW'ing them to a different warehouse, but why have a bunch
of warehouses you don't need? Just a lot of excess ITEMBL records that
way.

Thanks, all.
I have also thought of a character in the second position as well.
So, if I open an MO with no BOM then I could use the production item
number and add the necessary components (which gives me the ability to
track component usage for product performance metrics) and MRP would see
the components and act accordingly.
Hmmm....
Any down-side to this approach?

Should have pointed out that the "MS" orders are in the MRP planning
warehouse. We WANT the parts visible to MRP! Makes Purchasing's job a
lot easier, we have found.
Charley,
We also have a similar situation with our warranty rework, some is
charge,
some is free. What we have done is created two "MS" orders (M/O's with
an
"S" in position 2, and the rest is a G/L tag# that means something to
our
accounting department). As they need parts, they just charge the parts
to
either the "freebie" or the "pay for" MS orders. We clear MODATA for
those orders quarterly (after printing out the data, of course!) so we
know what the amount expensed to those accounts are.
We do the same thing with labor, except we use an "MP" (P for payroll)
order number that matches the G/L tag for the corresponding "MS" order.
Since a lot of the stuff is order policy code "G" and 20 days, it
doesn't usually have a massive impact on our production. We run a lot
of production models, and only a couple in rework at any given time (20
max a
week, and that kills us, usually 5 to 10). Some of the stuff, a LOT
of
the stuff is commonly used, and Purchasing has the stuff coming in
regularly. Special orders the customer just has to wait for us to get
the
parts (not good, but it's how we run).
Does that help?

R6, EPDM, OBPM, CSM
We have the need to repair and reman some of our products; sometimes on
warranty, sometimes billable. After searching, it appears to me that
the only way to use MO's to do this, without messing up MRP, is to do
this repair/reman work under another warehouse (I want to be able to use
the product's item number in the MO so I can track component usage over
time).
Does anyone have any suggestions that preclude another warehouse or am I
stuck?
Thanks!
