David,

I would anticipate that both mods and bolt-on apps will cause us problems
if we upgrade. Since all custom code needs to be tested for interaction
with the new version, and some may need to be changed, that is the primary
focus of our validation testing when we do an upgrade.

The other thing we do during an upgrade is identify if all custom code is
relevant. In some cases the functionality has been integrated with Mapics
(I think this is the case with a duplicate PO program we added in the
past) and in others our business has changed and we were not told by the
user community that they have been "working around" a mod that was
requested in the past. Taking this approach we always fight scope creep
to avoid new mod requests as we do an upgrade since the users don't
understand that we are removing unneeded lines of code not adding new
lines of code.

Re: [MAPICS-L] Real World Benefits to Mapics 7+ upgrade

I'm glad to see this being discussed (and the greater the level of
detail, the better). Could someone expand on the impact to "custom
code"? Are you talking about modificatons to MAPICS programs (which we
avoid as much as humanly possible) or are you talking about "bolt-on"
apps?

My company is trying to grasp the benefits of R7 and we just don't see
it (without adding any of the new modules such as PowerLink - which I
still don't understand).

Keep the opinions coming.....
