A long time ago when we were MAPICS DB we did that and it worked great.  But 
MAPICS XA is such a garbage heap of spaghetti files that I would not even 
attempt that now.

I'm thinking I'll not save the access paths and just plan on the extra time to 
restore.

That is correct. Trade off is it slows down the backup. So you may need to 
determine which is better.. Saving access paths or having them created during a 
restore.. Depending on what you are doing in test, have you thought about 
creating a proc to just copy some of the high activity files?
