I believe if you make the comments "item specific" they remain static and would 
only change if
maintained via COM.  You may want to check out files MBAXREP and/or MBAWREP.

        Jack,
        Can I create item comments that stay with the item forever? And how do I
        get to them (file name)?  We are currently using extended descriptions
        in purchasing and it is becoming an issue as we change finished goods to
        purchased items.  We need to be able to send the information from a file
        format to our web designer to for publishing.

                We would like to have about 100 characters and have those print
        on all
                documentation (acknowledgements, packing list, invoice, etc.) as
        well.
                Is that a custom programming issue or has anyone found a work
        around?
