Access would probably be a good, easy first choice. Does not have the
65,534 limitation. But it does suffer from a 2GB per database
limitation, in practical use. This is actually fairly large...if 2GB is
a problem, you could export a year at a time to separate databases.
Otherwise, you're into SQL land on the Microsoft side of things.

You can then select/filter the raw data in Access queries and export to
Excel if you're more comfortable working there, as many are. Once your
queries work, you can change them to SQL Pass-thru and they'll run MUCH
faster, as they bypass some of the internal Access translation
layers...much faster.

The 65,534 is a register limit, "FFFF" is 65,536. Don't they teach
hexidecimal anymore? (I'm showing my age!)

I don't know if Access has the same limitations. We don't use it, we
use the iSeries as our database management system. However, a Microsoft
partner also sells a package called FRx that has been in the MPower Expo
for a couple years, that may also be an alternative, depending on what
information they need - it sounds like an accounting issue in the
initial e-mail. They may NOT need to pull all of IMHIST in (that would
be horrendous for us, we have almost 3 million records written to IMHIST
every year). There's more information is available at
www.frxsoftware.com. We will be looking at this package ourselves
later.
