Shawn, Depending upon the model 400 you have and what level of the OS, an IPL is not really required on a regular basis. IBM used to say to IPL every so often to do some cleanup, but the newer boxes and OS's do not require mandatory IPLs. Some machines run 24X7X365 without a hitch. An IPL will do some additional cleanup, but normally in the course of running your business the machine will be IPLd a few times a year. With respect to reclaim storage, again that is not something that needs to be run regularly. If you are running out of temporary space or if you have some really bad system shut downs (Someone pulled the plug) you can run this command. This command can take many many hours to run if it hasn't been run that recently. Again, I don't normally recommend that you run this regularly. I think for us to help you more, we need to understand more about what your severe performance issues are. What size box do you have? How much main storage (memory) do you have? How many disk drives (DASD) do you have? What level of the OS are you on? How many users are actively running on this machine? What level of MAPICS are you running? Where are you seeing the performance issues? I'm new to the 400 so no laughing, I have never done and IPL on this server. I was told by a tech at MAPICS to do a monthly IPL and do a recapture of space. Is this standard practice? Will it improve performance? We are looking at cleaning up some files that have grown very large. I'm assuming we would do the recapture after cleaning these up. Thanks for any assistance.
