I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to do or what version of OS/400 or 
MAPICS you are running.

What version of OS/400 are you working with?
Running MAPICS XA R6 or R7?
If at R7 do you have the System Link product installed?
Are you trying to create a purchase order from data that is coming from 
outside of MAPICS?
Enhancement SH67254 gives you this capability ( 
http://support.mapics.com/einfo/Cover/67254660.TXT )
If you have System Link and are at R7 you have a XML interface to import 
data into the core applications.
If you have System-Link that's the way to go instead of writing your own 
interfaces.

If you're at V5R1M0 or higher it's much easier for Java to call RPG and 
RPG to call Java.
