I haven't looked at CMS400 for several years but in 1997 we seriously
considered replacing MAPICS with CMS. We had a team of accounting,
production, information systems and engineering. Our short list had 3 AS400
based solutions and 3 that were not. There were many things about CMS that
looked good. They were strong in automotive, more so than MAPICS. My
company is heavy into automotive. Also, CMS appeared to be very easy to
work with. I spoke with many references. One reference that converted from
MAPICS. With CMS I liked the fact that they didn't sell modules. When you
bought CMS you got everything. We didn't need to address the justifications
of incremental advances for MRP, PM, PM&C etc. It was all built in. The
CMS people said they felt the complete ERP package was more efficient for
them to support and increased customer satisfaction. We selected them over
the other 5 options including MAPICS. Then. . . . .we had some sudden
'negative' business changes at the eleventh hour of our review. We decided
to not make the switch and stick with MAPICS. Ironically 7 years and
several more business changes later MAPICS has proven to be capable.

If we were to evaluate ERP packages again, I would look at CMS again.
However, what is good for me may not be for you. Each company is unique and
should define their own requirements and decide which ERP package is best
for them. One size does not fit all.

As you may have seen from some of my previous postings we are reviewing
our MAPICS install and trying to make a stay or go decision.

I found another 400 based product that mentioned running up against
MAPICS, CMS400, and was wondering if anybody has heard or used this.
Hope this doesn't ruffle any MAPICS diehards.

Thanks.
