The method we use is where MAPICS manages the ITEM numbers and within the Description field is our part number EX: Item Desc: 78345 SL4512-12 23456 SL4512-08 We don't create an item number till we want to make it, just use the next number. Our Engrg. Dept. & PDM handle creation of the part numbers. Although we are slowly phasing out the Oracle PDM. Part number creation will be an internal custom program that will create an ITEM number when necessary (off-line load?). Most items are the same type of product but different lengths, so for example a piece of roofing that is 24" long has one part number and a piece that is identical expect 26" long has a different part number. Does anyone know a better way to handle this within MAPICS?
