Gregory, It is what CASE has evolved into stopping off at UML. Try the Olymars tool that Microsoft has provided for free. It generates .Net code for the schema, web access, windows client all at the same time. The components then can be changed with very few lines of code with all the validation and editing built in underneath. The nice thing is the newer tools don't require knowing CASE or UML to actually generate the application. It is still useful to get design agreement and document the functionality tho. DeKlarit is another product that generates from design worthy of exploration. Lots of nice stuff going on in that area. MAPICS did have a product that did all this back in the days of Marcam and Protean. It was very successful in what it did but the effort of having to create the foundation all the way up to the UI with the limited tools of that timeframe made it extremely expensive to develop. It did introduce the concept of schema compilers, objects divorced from the database, test harnesses for objects that are currently in vogue today. Given their cost structure I am not sure it would be much less expensive to continue with MAPICS or just move to a new vendor. Every generation of hardware and OS seems to produce a leader in applications to support it as the old leaders remain too tied to their existing customer base to prosper and survive. As far as technology goes... I am not sure .Net is really ready for ERP primetime yet. I would bet on J2EE being the better investment for the next couple of years at least. Linux + Oracle + J2EE is the sweet spot right now. With M$ you get the joy and the horror :) What the MRP run blue screened? It is not able to continue? It wants to report its problem??? Long term I would bet most of the functionality will be incorporated in code generators doing either Java or .Net. Everybody will be able to roll their own custom package with fewer fixes, few workarounds, far less add on applications and less cost.
