Well of course we do. We had a 602A calculating card punch with the skip
jump tabs to tell it where to stop and punch. And it had a whopping 72
positions of storage - not 72K, not 72MB - but 72. Six rolling counters of
12 digits each - and they could even be programmed to allow TWO different
numbers in some of them, so you could actually store 12 numbers. But then
we got advanced and would roll numbers in and out to do two or three step
calculations.

For the younger set, a calculating card punch could multiply different
fields of information on the card, like hours times rate and actually punch
the answer back in the same card - probably about 6 cards a minute.

Seriously, when we retired it, IBM told us it was going to the "museum in
Rochester."

We had a neighbor down the road with a 604 that was vented because of the
HEAT - and the users used it to warm up their hamburgers and sandwiches.

Does anyone remember the 010 card punch? or the 054 card verifiers? (After
you "punched" the data in the card, another operator used another machine, a
verifier and "verified" that it was punched correctly). How about the 514
and 519 programmable gangpunch machines and the 085 programmable collators.
The 402 programmable accounting machines and 407?

And don't forget the smaller, more efficient 96 column cards used by the
System/3 and MFCM (Mighty Fine Card Machine" where the card reader made 90
degree turns.

Recently I mentioned to a young software developer that when I got in to
this business punch cards had 90 columns and round holes. His response:
"before you mentioned holes I thought you were talking about time cards.
What are punch cards?"

It's been a long time since I've thought of 602s and 607s, 082s and 083s,
085s or even 650s, 1401s, 1410s and 1440s. Or how about 305 RAMACs. I bet
there are very few who remember tabulating punches, cranks for column
selections, gang sorting or plug board programming. Or things like bench
checking and word marks. Or an hour and 30 minutes to compile a 500 source
statement COBOL programs.

I keep a pack of 5081's and 3700's in my desk drawer to keep things in
perspective when I am running short on disk in my 80GB desktop. I spent
many an hour standing in front of an IBM Card Sorter, sorting 40 trays of
cards by SSN for taxes. Service bureau job. Hmmmmm - I'm showing my
age....

I keep that in mind when I go to complain about how hard it is to get some
things done today. Maintaining a logical over the data on my 270 would
probably take so little time I wouldn't be able to measure it.

BTW - I'd like to hear the Nathan joke.....

I am getting a COMPLEX with all the talk about the "nathan" joke! Could
somebody please tell me whether it is about me? :-)

The only time I ever used punched cards was to build a "house of cards"
when I was 10 years old! (My brother was in IT long before I was.)

Is that the one about "slash, Nathan" - back in the days of punched cards
and OCL decks? I didn't hear it (first) from Dave, but I have used it for
at least 30 years. I heard it from Tom Neuman - at the time he was head of
IBM education in Milwaukee - later went on to be an IBM Branch Manager in
Iowa. I still have a page of his jokes.

Dave and I go back at least to the 70s - and we can also attest to his vast
MAPICS and manufacturing knowledge. I think I even have some autographed
copies. Are they worth more?

Dave,

I know I'm getting old and all, and my memory isn't what it used to be, but
I don't remember a "Nathan" joke. Did you hold out on me?

What's wrong with the "Nathan" joke?
   It's always been a favorite!
In fact, I still use it.

Seriously, thanks for the kind words.

I have not done any direct consulting with MAPICS users for a couple
years
but I still like to stay in touch. And I still have a few copies of
those
books taking up space in my closet.
