Dale, I also asked the same question five years ago when we purchased MAPICS (to replace our home-grown, non-Y2K, running on obsolete equipement, software) and were installing it. Almost every training class, almost every consultant and implementor, would begin by saying, "In the older version, MAPICS did this, but in this new version, MAPICS does that..." I finally asked our affiliate if they ever sold to a new customer (like us) or only upgraded their existing base? (BTW, they made at least TWO new sales in 1998, since our sister company purchased MAPICS at the same time we did, also to replace their home-grown system.) Paul, You are probably correct, probably most of the people in this thread are IT-types. I am, although I also have a role in our company from an overall business point in process improvement. You do raise an excellent question that I'd like to know myself. How many new customers (as in not upgrading from prior releases or adding new modules) has MAPICS sold to? I rarely see anything in the press about that, while I frequently read about new SAP, JD Edwards, and other software ERP sales. That always concerns me. For example, our corporate lords and masters at Fleetwood Corporate acquired new ERP solutions for two of their divisions, and in spite of the fact that our division has been very successful using MAPICS, MAPICS wasn't even on their list of solutions being considered. (We run as an independant entity within Fleetwood). They actually selected two different packages, a different one for each division. I am concerned if the growth in MAPICS, Inc. as a company comes mainly from sales to existing customers and acquisitions of new software companies (as in FrontStep). That doesn't bode well for the thousands of current customers. Of course, it appears that the ERP market is very cutthroat. I get a couple of calls every month (or week) wanting me to switch to a Microsoft solution, or JDE, or PeopleSoft, and so on. I haven't worked with other ERP solutions - but I've heard enough horror stories to know they have their problems - just like MAPICS XA. I believe that relatively, most ERP solutions are hard work to support. I think from the absolute perspective that most Support people would agree that their job is very frustrating - particularly when dealing with non-IT Users & Directors who just do not comprehend the effort that goes into the IT Support role. In terms of whether to implement MAPICS XA or another (custom) package I think the general advice is that you need good, on-site IT Support at the implementation phase regardless of the solution chosen. >From the reasons above I, probably like most people in this group, am sometimes bewildered by the comments people make regarding the suitability of the functionality of MAPICS to their business. I even wonder at times if my Company is actually using the same MAPICS XA as this group! >From my own experience I have seen my Company 'sail close to the wind' with some of the software issues that have arisen in MAPICS XA. It is my belief that these issues should not have happened and are unacceptable (preventable?). However, we're still in business! Regarding the Internet Help Site I have very rarely found the answer to some of the more 'burning issue' type questions I assume that most people in this group are IT Support and judge MAPICS XA from that perspective - what about actual users, i.e Warehouse Managers, Production Planners, Customer Services, etc? On a final note, just how many new companies does MAPICS sell to, as opposed to supplying enhancements to the existing customer base, and where is MAPICS in the sales league of Mid-Range ERP Suppliers?
