Need to get non-inventoried items on bills of material... Any ideas?

Mapics will not allow non-inventoried items on a bill of material - they
must have an inventory code of 1.
We have several expense type items that we have set up as item type 9 (user
defined) with an inventory code of 2 (misc.). We don't want these items
affecting inventory but we do need them in bills of material. Any ideas on
how we can attempt this?
