I have used macros to do basic things and I think that it will help you with
this "basic" entry that you want.  Maybe I do not understand if the issue is
that you need direction in terms of how to record the macro or how to coded
directly.

If you use START RECORDING A MACRO, the system will ask you for a file name to
same your macro.  Once you do that, you suppose to do exactly what you want to
do on the screen.  Once you are done with the steps, go to STOP RECORDING MACRO
and you are done.

After you entered the item number and the action code and ready to enter the
"basic data", you can then call the macro by clicking on a button that you can
create on the toolbar.  To do that, do a right click on the toolbar and do a
CREATE ITEM.  Then go to the MACRO/SCRIPT TAB, look for the file name you
entered on the previous step and done.
